Frequently Asked Question

Q.1 What is Rustgard?
Ans. Rustgard is a new Hi-Tech. product that arrests the process and provides a stable
tenacious surface protection preventing further development of rusting process.

Q.2 How does the product work?
Ans. Rustgard contains organic ingredients which chemically convert rust to a stable organo-metallic complex without any salt formation. This, along with the polymer, combine to form a strong and stable protective coating, sealing the now rust free surface from exposure to humidity, moisture and air, which in turn inhibits further rust formation.

Q.3 Is rusting also taking place under visible surface rust?
Ans: Yes. Rust being porous and containing moisture, the sub surface iron is constantly being exposed to rusting and the process does not stop.

Q.4 Why is Rustgard application preferred over Phosphating?
Ans: Phosphating has the following disadvantages?

a) Does not completely neutralize different rust formations
b) Residual acid will cause blistering of topcoats
c) Will reduce strength of steel – its use is restricted in shipping
d) Ferrous phosphates have short life span before rust reappears and leads to brittleness
e) An oil primer will have to be used prior to any water borne top coat
f) It is toxic, corrosive and environmentally unfriendly as it finds its way into the water system

Q.5 What is Rustgard made of?
Ans. It contains a unique polymer, which has excellent barrier properties

Q. 6 Does RG 010 require a top coat?
Ans. Yes, after comprehensive trials, it was confirmed that RG-010 was most suited when applied as part of a paint system as it provided the best barrier properties to the underlying organo-metallic complex. It was also confirmed that RG-010 was not compatible with a direct top coat of Aluminum paint but if red oxide were applied between RG-010 and the Aluminum paint, results were excellent.

Q. 7 On what surfaces is it used?
Ans. Rustgard is used on iron and steel structures.

Q.8 How quickly does Rustgard dry?
Ans. Touch dry 60 minutes. Fully cures in 24 hours.

Q.9 Will Rustgard stop rust?
Ans. Yes, Rustgard not only stops surface and subsurface rusting, but also prolongs the life span of the metal structure as well as the paint systems.

Q.10 Can I use Rustgard if it is damp or humid outside?
Ans. Rustgard can be used in damp and humid environments where normal drying is possible.

Q.11 When can I paint over Rustgard?
Ans. RG 010 should be applied only as follows :-
(a) Water-based topcoats can be applied after 6 hours
(b) Solvent-based topcoats after 24 hours.

Q.12 What happens if it rains on treated surface before Rustgard dries?
Ans. If Rustgard gets wet within 1 hour of application, then the surface would have to be repainted.

Q.13 Does it have any uses other than rust conversion?
Ans. Rustgard provides a very tough protective coating.

Q.15 Is the product harmful or is it hazardous?
Ans. The product is non inflammable and non-toxic.

Q.16 Is the product environmentally safe?
Ans. The product is engineered to be as “environment-friendly” as possible.

Q.17 What happens if I get it on my hands?
Ans. It is always a good practice to wear gloves at the time of applying product. If the product stains the hands then wash off with soap and water.

Q.18 What first aid is required?
Ans. Flush well with water.

Q.19 What will happen if I apply Rustgard on a heat source?
Ans. Heat will soften the coating. It will harden again when cool. Extreme heat will cause the product to char.

Q.20 Will the product freeze?
Ans. Yes.

Q.21 Can you apply Rustgard to shot – blasted or blast cleaned steel?
Ans. Yes, but there is no need to shot blast or blast clean the surface, if Rustgard is used as the primer.

Q.22 Can you remove Rustgard once applied?
Ans. Yes, by using certain chemical solvents, but only part of the polymeric film which covers the non rusted area of the metal beneath. However, due to the chemical reaction between Rustgard and the rusted metal, the matrix created by the reaction is partly embedded with the metal and cannot be removed completely. Therefore, the micron thickness of the original Rustgard application is reduced due to the polymer being removed, but the resultant matrix becomes part of the reformed metal and cannot be removed.

The use of Rustgard RG-010 is extremely cost effective. The corrosion of expensive plant & equipment as well as repetitive painting cause huge expenditure in repairs and maintenance - the use of Rustgard will prevent such losses.
